Suriname halts ferry service from Guyana

…after confirming 1st coronavirus case

Surinamese authorities have halted its ferry service from Guyana after the country recorded its first coronavirus case.

On Friday Suriname’s Vice President, Michael Ashwin Adhin told the National Assembly that a person who travelled from the Netherlands last week has tested positive for the virus.
He noted that the country’s borders and airports will be closed at midnight on Friday.
With respect to the ferry service from Guyana, Surinamese authorities said that the service will be closed until further notice.
The Canaiwaima Ferry service plies the Guyana-Suriname route on a daily basis. On Wednesday Guyana confirmed its first imported case and advised of precautionary measures.
The patient, a 52-year-old Guyanese female, had arrived in Guyana on March 5 and five days later, she was found to have diabetes and hypertension. On Wednesday the woman died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Meanwhile, on Thursday, President David Granger convened a meeting of Ministers to better coordinate Government’s action plan in response to the presence of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Guyana.
