A high-level ministerial delegation from neighbouring Suriname is expected to arrive in Guyana today where they will meet Guyanese officials to advance discussions on a number of areas.
The Surinamese team will comprise of that country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation Albert Ramdin as well as Suriname’s Minister of Public Works, Riad Nurmohamed, and the Minister of Public Health, Amar Ramadhin, along with other Government officials.
During the visit, Foreign Minister Ramdin and his team are expected to meet with Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd, to continue consultations on the various initiatives agreed upon by Presidents Dr Irfaan Ali and Chandrikapersad Santokhi, who had visited Guyana in August.
According to a statement from Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions will also focus on preparations for the launch of a Strategic Dialogue and Cooperation Platform (SDCP).
During President Santokhi’s visit to Guyana a few months ago for President Ali’s inauguration ceremony, the two countries engaged in a series of meetings with stakeholders on a number of issues including strengthening diplomatic cooperation, growth of the private sectors of each economy, the advancement of the oil and gas sectors, among other areas.
Just a few days ago, Guyana and Suriname formally marked the site for the proposed Corentyne River Bridge, linking the two countries. In fact, Suriname’s Public Works Minister, Dr Riad Nurmohamed and Guyana’s Public Works Minister Juan Edghill visited the location where they planted flags on the Guyana side of the river and then the Suriname side of the river.
The Surinamese ministerial delegation will be departing on October 16.
Formal diplomatic relations between the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname were established on November 25, 1975.
