The ladies of Swan Football Club, on Saturday Afternoon, pulled off a stunning second half come back, to make their way to the quarterfinal of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)- Guyana National Women’s Football Association (GNWFA) Super 16 tournament.
The Swan ladies, hailing from the Linden Soesdyke Highway, were tasked with travelling to St. Cuthbert’s Mission for the opening game of the first-ever Women’s year- end football event.
Once there, the ladies heard remarks from the likes of Village Toshao Timothy Andrews, Deputy Speaker Lennox Shuman, GFF President Wayne Forde, GNWFA President Andrea Johnson and the British High Commissioner to Guyana Jane Miller.
The group all highlighted the importance of the tournament’s slogan against domestic violence.
When the football action finally commenced, the Swan ladies seemed to find the sandy surface difficult for playing, while the ladies from St. Cuthbert’s played with ease, but missed many chances.
A free kick awarded St. Cuthbert’s in the 12th minute resulted in the firt goal of the game, coming off the boots of Zanita Abraham.
The remainder of the half elapsed quietly, with Swan still unable to find their rhythm by that time. The second half of play was a completely different ball game, however, as Swan drilled 4 goals home in pursuit if a victory.
Aviana Adrian found the back of the net in the 47th and 81st, while Aaliyha Baston completed her brace with goals in the 84th and 89th, for Swan’s 4.
The Women’s copetition will continue on Tuesday, December 14, when the Guyana Defense Force FC takes on the women of Upper Mazaruni.
