Taunt over COVID-19 status leads to stabbing

A teenager is in serious condition after he was stabbed by a 41-year-old man during a confrontation on Sunday at Pope Street, New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Based on information received, 15-year-old Riyaad Hussain, of St Magdalen Street, New Amsterdam, and a 16-year-old friend were standing on Pope Street about 18:00h when the suspect, who was passing, taunted Hussain that his mother, a nurse at the New Amsterdam Hospital, had contracted the coronavirus.
This, however, did not sit well with the teenager, a student of Canje Secondary School, so he defended his mother. As such, an argument ensued between the teen and the suspect which quickly escalated into a scuffle.
It is alleged that during the physical encounter, the suspect whipped out an ice pick from his waist and stabbed the victim to the left side of his chest. The teenager reportedly collapsed onto the roadway, and was immediately picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was admitted.
The matter was reported to the Police, and the suspect was subsequently arrested. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
