Taxi driver abandons car with over 100lbs ganja

Agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) are on the hunt for a taxi driver identified as Anthony Carmichael, who abandoned his motor car on Sheriff Street, Georgetown with more than 45 kilograms (100 pounds) of compressed marijuana on Monday morning.
Based on reports received, the motor car bearing registration number PKK 1609 originated from New Amsterdam with the well-wrapped packages of marijuana in the back seat and trunk of the vehicle.
It was reported that the CANU ranks were tracking the vehicle as it made its rounds around the city.
The driver, however, realising that he was being monitored, drove to Sheriff Street, where he parked the car outside Royal Castle fast food restaurant and fled the scene before the drug enforcement officers arrived at the scene.
The agents subsequently unearthed a quantity of marijuana and questioned how the driver passed several roadblocks in Berbice without being caught. Investigations are ongoing.
The Berbice River area is one of the areas that have become a hotspot for the cultivation and drying of marijuana plants. There have been several raids by members of the Police Narcotics Branch resulting in the destructing of several hundred pounds of the illegal plant.
Only recently, the Guyana Police Force B Division (Berbice) conducted a drug eradication exercise at Ebini, Berbice River where a total of six fields of cultivated cannabis covering an estimated 30 acres were destroyed.
During the operation, 600,000 plants, ranging from four to five feet in height and weighing approximately 300,000kg, were destroyed. In addition, 200,000kg of dried cannabis were found and destroyed.
Two shotguns were also discovered along with several cartridges.
