A taxi driver was on Thursday arrested after he was intercepted with 5.248 kilograms of imported ganja at Parika Ferry Stelling, Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
The suspect of Unity Village, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, is expected to make his court appearance in the new week.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) stated that the drug was found in a haversack belonging to the man after he arrived at Parika Stelling via speedboat.
Based on reports received, a search was conducted on his person during which five “brick like” objects containing the ganja were unearthed.
The suspect, who said he is a carpenter, was escorted to CANU Headquarters where the cannabis was analysed and proved to be an imported drug known as “poppy”.
The street value is estimated at over $1 million.
