A 35-year-old taxi driver of Retch-Door-Zee, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, who was arrested on January 3 for a series of robberies, has been jailed.
Kwame Jowanza, was arrested after a party of Policemen went to his home and a search was carried out in his presence. During the search, 14 ladies’ handbags, one fake licence number plate, two Samsung cellphones without Sim cards, one tablet, and one Bluetooth speaker were found in his possession.
Investigators said that on Tuesday at 17:00h, an identification parade was held at the La Grange Police Station and the driver was positively identified by several robbery victims as the person who had robbed them.
As such, he was told of the allegation, and he admitted to committing the offences.
The man reportedly robbed 21-year-old Basmattie Surjpaul, a clerk of Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, on Tuesday at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo; and 23-year-old Melenda Alli, also a clerk of Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, on the same day.
He also robbed 18-year-old lab technician Budindra Basdeo of Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara (WCD) on November, 26th last year, at about 07:00h at Ruimzeight Public Road, WCD.
Tamika Bidder, 21, of DeWillem, West Coast Demerara was also robbed on November 26th, 2021, at 06:45h in DeWillem, WCD.
On Wednesday he faced three counts of robbery under arms and one count of larceny charges from the person when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul. He admitted to the offences and was sentenced to six years, six months imprisonment. (G9)
