Taxi driver shot during carjacking

A 46-year-old taxi driver is the latest victim of the string of vicious carjacking attacks, which have seen operators of Toyota Premio and Allion motor cars being ambushed by hijackers in and around the capital city.
Phillip King of Festival City, Georgetown, is now left nursing two gunshot wounds at the Georgetown Public Hospital, after falling prey to a trap laid by a group of hijackers.
Reports are that King was hired by two female passengers Saturday afternoon, who requested to be taken to a church in Durban Backlands.
Upon arriving at their destination, an armed man jumped into the vehicle and began firing shots at the driver. The injured driver was then kicked out, and the trio fled the scene in his car.
King was picked up by public-spirited persons and rushed to the Georgetown medical institution, nursing several gunshot wounds to the leg. The 46-year-old was said to have undergone surgery to remove the bullets from his leg. The Guyana Police Force in June had reported that hijackers have been hiring cars in Georgetown under the pretext of wanting transportation, and such cases have been on a constant rise.
Earlier this month, Guyana Times columnist Ryhaan Shah was attacked and robbed of her Toyota Premio motor car in a similar manner. There have been numerous instances within the past months of bandits taking on the role of passengers to carry out their plans. However, no arrests have been made.
