Taxi driver slapped with illegal gun charge

Danesh Mahadeo, a 28-year-old taxi driver of La Bonne Intention (LBI) Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, was on Wednesday remanded to prison on a gun-related charge.

It is alleged that on Monday last, Mahadeo was arrested by Police ranks from the Cove and John Police Station and charged with the offences of possession of firearm and possession of ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.
This is contrary to Section 16 (2)(a) of the Firearm Act, Chapter 16:05.
The man appeared at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was nonetheless remanded to prison and the case will continue on March 8.
Just a day ago a 50-year-old man was remanded to prison after Police allegedly found an illegal firearm and ammunition at his Genip Lane, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown home.
Eustace Thomas, a father of two, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on January 21, he had a .38 Taurus revolver along with five rounds of .38 ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges; he was remanded until February 21.
