Taxi drivers, busted with ganja near Lusignan Prison, remanded

Two taxi drivers were on Friday remanded to prison following the discovery of 73 pounds of marijuana in a vehicle along Lusignan Prison Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Kurt Gittens of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, and Glen Gray of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on July 21, they had 73 pounds of cannabis sativa in their possession for the purpose of trafficking. They were remanded to prison until August 13 by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
It was reported that on the day in question, Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks were carrying out an operation on the ECD when they intercepted a motor car with the illegal substance.
At the time, the vehicle was being driven by Gray, while Gittens was a passenger. They were both arrested.
