A 38-year-old teacher of Schoonord, West Bank Demerara (WBD), was on Friday charged for Attempting to Obstruct the Course of Justice – Contrary to Section 330 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.
Seeranie Rameshwar appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, where charge was read to her.
Rameshwar pleaded not guilty to the charge and was subsequently placed on $200,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to July 7.
Meanwhile, Rameshwar’s brother, Davanand Rambarran, 40, of Vriesland, WBD, and Nicolas Osborne, 25, a labourer of Sister’s Village, WCD, were also charged on Friday for the possession of narcotics.
The duo appeared at the Wales Magistrate’s Court to answer the joint charge. They also appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty.
Both men denied the charge.
Police said at around 13:00h on Tuesday a team of their ranks headed by a cadet officer went to Wales Public Road, WBD, where the ranks observed Osborne sitting on a bicycle in the vicinity of the Wales Police Station.
As the ranks continued to observe, they said they saw motor car PAB 228, which was at the time driven by Rambarran, drive up alongside Osborne and hand him a black bulky plastic bag, then he drove off.
Osborne, after taking possession of the plastic bag, rode off on his bicycle in the direction of the Police ranks. He was pursued by the officers and apprehended.
Police said they opened the bag in his presence and found leaves, seeds, and stems of cannabis. He was also found with a black toy gun in the waist of his pants.
After the discovery, he was escorted along with the cannabis and the toy gun to the Wales Police Station where he was kept in Police custody.
The ranks then went to the home of Rambarran, where he was contacted and told of the offence.
At the Police station, the cannabis was weighed by the Police in their presence, and it amounted to 481 grams.
The two suspects were then escorted to the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, where they were placed into custody. They both pleaded not guilty to the charge and were placed on $300,000 bail each.
The matter was adjourned to July 24.
On the same day at about 14:35h, Police said Rameshwar’s sister, Seeranie, allegedly went to the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, where she contacted a Police rank in the presence of another rank, and allegedly told him that she would offer him $300,000 to have the charge against her brother dropped.
The rank then informed his superior of Rameshwar’s intention and when she allegedly handed over the sum of money, which amounted to $280,000 to the rank, she was arrested.
