Teacher jailed for nightclub assault; Wakapau man remanded for attempted murder

A 21-year-old teacher from Pomona, Essequibo Coast, has been sentenced to one month in prison after being found guilty of assaulting a speedboat captain during an altercation at a local nightclub.
Andrew Whyte, of Lot 25 Pomona, was charged with the offence of assault causing actual bodily harm committed on 24-year-old Arnold Adams, a speedboat captain residing at Lot 255 Good Hope, Essequibo Coast.
The incident occurred last Sunday at the Elite Night Club on the Essequibo Coast, and the charge was laid under Section 30(a) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.

On Tuesday, Whyte appeared at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke, where the matter was concluded and the court found him guilty of the offence. As a result, he was sentenced to one month imprisonment.
Meanwhile, in a separate matter, 32-year-old Vandon Daniels, a pork-knocker from Wakapau, Lower Pomeroon River, was charged with attempted murder.
The charge, laid under Section 103(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, alleges that Daniels attempted to murder 25-year-old David Gunputh, a fellow Wakapau resident. The incident that took place on April 22, in Wakapau Village, Lower Pomeroon River.
Daniels appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke on Friday at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court. Given the indictable nature of the charge, he was not required to plead initially. However, the prosecutor made an application under the Administration of Justice Act, which was granted, and the charge was re-read.
Daniels entered a not-guilty plea. The prosecution objected to bail, and the Magistrate ordered that Daniels be remanded to prison. The case was adjourned to May 19, 2025, for disclosure of statements.
