A 16-year-old student of Ann’s Grove Secondary School, East Coast Demerara (ECD), is the country’s latest road fatality after he was struck by a motor car while heading home.
Dead is Shamar James of Lot 67 Casareep Man Street, South Haslington, ECD.
Reports are at about 20:20h on Sunday, the youth was walking with his cousins on his way home when he was struck.
According to the police, James was on the southern side of the road heading in the western direction with his cousins while the motor car involved in the accident was also heading along the same path. The police stated that as the vehicle approached the group, the car slammed into the youth and reportedly dragged him a short distance away, before the driver sped off.
A public-spirited person rushed to the injured boy’s aid and took him to the hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical facility.
When contacted, Police Commander of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) Subdivision C (East Coast Demerara), Assistant Police Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor said that the driver of the motor car is presently in Police custody.
