Teen drowns in Pomeroon River

A search has been launched to recover the body of a teenager who drowned on Saturday while swimming in the Pomeroon River, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Dead is 17-year-old Jafaun (only name given), a labourer of Moruca and Grant Tenez Ferme, Lower Pomeroon River. The incident occurred at about 14:00h.
According to the police report, Jafaun left his home in Moruca, Region One (Barima-Waini), to work on a farm at lower Pomeroon. The teenager reportedly consumed alcohol on a regular basis.
His employer, Carl Roberts, told investigators that he left to go to the backdam on Saturday morning, leaving Jafaun at home. He noted that at about 14:30h, he was informed by his daughters that Jafaun was drinking earlier on the farm and went in the Pomeroon River to swim.
The man said he was told that the teenager swam to the deeper part of the river, where he was seen “fighting up” in the water before disappearing. This was reportedly witnessed by two females on the farm.
A search team was formed but the teenager was not located.
The matter was reported to the police and an investigation has been launched.
