Police in the North West District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 16-year-old, who drowned on Sunday at Canal Bank, Port Kaituma, Region One (Barima-Waini).
Dead is Vernil Fredricks of Fitzburg, Port Kaituma.
According to reports, the incident occurred at about 14:20h when Fredricks was swimming in the middle of the river. He was heard calling for help before disappearing beneath the water and failing to resurface.
A report was made to the Port Kaituma Police Station and ranks, along with public-spirited citizens, responded to the scene. The teenager’s body was later retrieved from the river and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was administered but was unsuccessful. Fredricks was then taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. His body is currently at the Port Kaituma Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
