The 35-year-old housewife of Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, who was on Wednesday stabbed multiple times by her husband, was living in an abusive relationship.
On Wednesday, Rajwattie Punni called “Sharida”, of Lot 105 Letter Kenny Village, was stabbed her husband, a fisherman, after he accused her of infidelity.

The couple had been married for 19 years and has three children. According to a close relative, the physical abuse started from the inception of the marriage.
“I use to tell her to leave him; to go away… She have relatives at Fyrish and I told her that she can go there,” a relative told this newspaper. Reports are the fisherman returned from the sea on Monday and allegedly said that he was going to end the woman’s life after he claimed infidelity.
Reports are that on Wednesday, the couple had an argument and shortly after, the fisherman was seen exiting the house and going into the yard where his wife was, where he began stabbing her.
Another relative, who witnessed what had occurred, said that she was too scared to intervene.
“He pick the knife up and started to stab her just like that. I could not do nothing at the moment when I see that,” the eyewitness said while noting that she screamed out to neighbours to help.
“One neighbour came over fast and when she was going to tell him to stop, he raised the knife on her so she backed out.”
A relative recalled that the couple’s 13-year-old son, who was sent on an errand to the shop, heard the screaming and returned home. According to the relative, the teenager rushed towards his father, pushed him away and told his bleeding mother to run.

“After the son push him off, the mother get up and she run out of the yard and then she collapse,” the relative recalled.
Relatives said that Punni was repeatedly urged to leave the abusive relationship but always stayed after her husband threatened to commit suicide if she left.
On Tuesday evening, she sent a video with marks of violence on her upper body to relatives and stated that she had had enough and had made up her mind to finally end the years of abuse.
“He does beat her bad. Sometimes he would pull her out of the bathroom naked skin and beat her. Since they married, I telling her that I am scared for her,” a relative related.
The woman’s husband works as a fisherman for pirate accused Nakool Manohar called “Fiya”, who is currently on trial for the deadly 2018 piracy attack which left three dead and 12 still missing and presumed dead.
Reports are that the woman received four stabs to her upper chest, and a lung was punctured. This newspaper was told that she has since undergone an eight-hour surgery at the New Amsterdam Hospital but remains in a critical condition.
The suspect, who fled the scene, was later seen in Black Bush Polder. Police went to a house there but came up empty-handed as he made good his escape.
