Teenage girl placed in Police lock-ups for 4 days

A Corentyne, Berbice mother is seeking answers after her 16-year-old daughter was placed in the lock-ups for four days. The mother was also asked to pay $100,000 station bail after the minor was accused of simple larceny.
The 16-year-old was locked up since last Friday.
According to her mother, Radikha Udho, last Thursday morning, an elderly woman from the village told her that she could not find her US Green Card. She said she went and assisted the elderly woman in the search for her Green Card. The villager then discovered that gold and silver jewellery was also missing.
Udho said when she was at the market later that day, she received a telephone call stating that the Police were at her home. She said she went to the Number 51 Police Station to enquire and was told that the elderly woman had accused her daughter of stealing the jewellery.
However, on Friday, she took her daughter to the Police station as requested. A statement was taken and the teenager was detained and subsequently placed in the lock-ups.
Guyana Times is in receipt of recordings where a Police Officer is heard saying it was the station Sergeant who had set the teen’s bail.
Addressing the issue, a senior Police Officer from the Division [B Division] stated the bail required was excessive. The officer said given the circumstances, the officer could have used his discretion. However, after much lobbing, the station bail was reduced to $50,000.
Meanwhile, the senior officer told this publication that the matter should have been handled differently and if it was that the teenager had to be detained, it could have been done without placing her into the lock-ups for such a long period. (Andrew Carmichael)
