A teenager was on Monday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a narcotics possession charge when he appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
Nickey Nirmal of Lot 3 Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, was in a Route 43 minibus when he was arrested by an off-duty Police rank. Based on information received, the Policeman observed Nirmal acting in a suspicious manner.
At the time, he was carrying a bulky 10kg rice bag. The Police ordered the vehicle to stop at the Amelia’s Ward Police Outpost, where a search was conducted on the bag during which 297 grams of compressed marijuana was found. The 18-year-old was told of the offence and admitted to ownership of the ganja.
Apart from the three years’ sentence, he was also ordered to pay a fine of $445,000.
