THAG endorses Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee
12th Annual Guyana Cup…
Over the past 12 editions of the Guyana Cup, the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee has been expanding to cater to increasing numbers of visitors – new and returning – having received approximately 12,000 at last year’s event.
The Tourism and Hospitality Association (THAG) was pleased to endorse the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee in its hosting of the 12th Annual Guyana Cup in collaboration with the Rising Sun Turf Club on August 19, 2018.
The Annual Guyana Cup is a successful tourism event in its own right having been responsible for bringing a unique niche of visitors to the destination following the offspring of their internationally bred horses from the USA, Suriname, Trinidad, Canada and other locations.
It is with delight that THAG endorses this sporting tourism initiative hosted by the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee and proposes that it should be added
as a calendar event for fans of horse- racing and families alike seeking new experiences while in Guyana.
Sport tourism refers to the experience of travel to engage in or view sport-related activities. It is generally recognised that there are three types of sport tourism including sport event tourism, active sport tourism, and nostalgia sport tourism.
Sport event tourism includes hallmark events such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup football championships. Since the early 1990s, international sporting events such as the World Cups and the Olympic Games were actively promoted as tourist attractions bringing large numbers of people to the destination following their team or in this case, favourite horse.
In addition to these major hallmark events, sponsored tournaments such as the IPL Twenty20 cricket and tennis have also joined the plethora of this spectator-based sector of sport tourism. Similarly, tourism associated with professional sport teams and athletics namely the Digicel Meet in Jamaica are part of this type of sports tourism. Who is to say that the Annual Guyana Cup cannot attain these heights?
Given that the Cup is a family-oriented and key tourism event for Berbice, THAG encourages all patrons to have a designated driver; if you drink, drink responsibly and travel safely when departing the event.
