The Jewan Ka Nritya (JKN) Dance Company has been under the leadership of the multitalented Roshini Persaud since 2003. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. Persaud is a former Miss India Guyana and international award winner of The Miss India Worldwide Miss Congeniality.
She is on the Guyana National Dance Committee and has performed on the national and international arena, representing Guyana at Carifesta. She was awarded the National Youth Award of Excellence in 2015 and was awarded Peace Ambassador in 2016. She is one of the co-authors of Women Across Borders. She is also a television personality and a radio broadcaster. Beyond this, Persuad is a wife, a mother, a mentor and role model.
“I have been dancing since I was five years old. Dance for me began in cultural school performances. When I reflect on my ages of dance, it’s quite clear that dance has become who I am. I allow dance to consume me each time I perform. My sanctuary; just me and the music,” she noted.
She is advocating for culture, diversity and extra curriculum. “Dance or any form of the art or sport teaches discipline, time management and balance,” she added.
She holds Jewan Ka Nritya (JKN) close to her heart and more so, loves and cares for her students more than expression defines. “I teach them to be grounded and most importantly, to be true to themselves, to express and dance from within,” she added.
At all times, she challenges and reminds them that they can be anything they want to be as long as they are passionate. “When all else fails; dance can save you, dance can bring you back. Smile, sing and dance, allow your inner energy to triumph. Why hold back? There aren’t any walls, no confinement just free open space; so just dance.”
Sustainability of culture is important generation after generation. There are corporate entities that hold this by definition; and they contribute towards this valuable cause which provides the youths to express themselves through the arts.
Gratitude is extended to Impressions, Sissons Paint, Ganesh Parts, Del Ice Company – Crystal Ice House, Victoria Najab’s GO, Lotus Mall (Parika), Feel The Beat Tassa Group, Roshini’s Rocking Recipes and John Lewis Styles.
The general public is urged to support JKN’s family of dancers so that they can commence their dream project of building a dance studio on the West Bank Of Demerara; providing youths with a medium of positive influence that teaches discipline and time management, whilst embracing culture.
