The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Friday announced that it will be moving away from physical examinations and will be bringing its theoretical examinations to attain a driver’s licence online.
This was announced by Chief Traffic Officer, Senior Superintendent Ramesh Ashram as he delivered remarks at the National Road Safety Stakeholders’ Forum.
According to Ashram, the digitisation will commence at the beginning of April, and the trainee drivers will be able to receive their results immediately after.
He also announced that the new system will only be available to candidates who purchase their packages from Traffic Headquarters.
“The electronic examination as it relates to the theoretical part of the driving test will be conducted at the Felix Austin Police College but that is for candidates who purchase their learner driver package in 4A Brickdam and Traffic Headquarters,” he said.
He said this type of examination will erase any doubt of corruption while at the same time improving the transparency of the examination.
Before writing the examination, persons will need to present their identification cards, and will not be permitted to have in their possession any paper, pens, or electronic devices.
Anyone found in possession of these items will be disqualified immediately.
If persons should fail the exam, a payment of $1000 is required to rewrite the exam one month after the date of failure. The schedule for online exams will be published shortly.
Over the years there have been several allegations of persons purchasing their Letter of Competence from Police ranks, as opposed to buying their package and going through the right process.
A Letter of Competence is issued by the Police when a person successfully completes the practical part of the driver’s examination.
Once issued, the letter is taken to the Guyana Revenue Authority where the person pays a fee and gets a driver’s licence.
