In the most recent incident, Lorna’s Snackette and Bar at the corner of Main and Pitt Streets in New Amsterdam was burglarized, and the intruders reportedly carted off utensils and beverages valued in excess of $220,000.
Lorna James, who operates the business in the heart of the town’s shopping area, told Guyana Times that she had temporarily closed the business as a result of the restrictions during the COVID-19 outbreak.
She explained that she had been paying regular visits to the building since closing the business three weeks ago.
According to the distressed woman, she was there last Thursday, and when she returned on Monday, she discovered that there was a huge hole in the wall.
Upon further investigation, the businesswoman discovered that the top half of the back door was left open. “There was a big hole in the back wall,” she said.
Her microwave, four electric pan warmers, several cartons of cigarettes and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages were discovered missing.
The building has eight closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras. However, the memory card with the recordings were missing. The bandits also took the woman’s cable box.
The matter has since been reported to the Police. She said Police visited the business premises one day after she reported the matter. She related that she had to bombard the Police with telephone calls before they eventually went to her business place and examined the scene.
