A third suspect in the Potoko Creek robbery has been remanded on Thursday, bringing to five the number of alleged robbers accounted for of the six men who allegedly robber a labourer in the Canje River.
Accused: Rondell Crawford
Two were shot dead by Police at the scene of the robbery; two were remanded on Tuesday; and Rondell Crawford was on Thursday remanded by Senior New Amsterdam Magistrate Alex Moore.
The 21-year-old Crawford, of Betsy Ground in East Canje, was not required to plead to an indictable charge detailing that he and others, on Friday March 2, 2018, at Potoko Creek Canje River, robbed Bharrat Mahadeo of 24 sheep valued at $1.2 million; four lengths of rope valued at $24,000; one solar panel worth $75,000; 15 ducks valued at $30,000; one Nokia cellular phone worth $5000; horse bit valued at $10,000; two torchlights valued at $4,000; cutlass worth $2000, and radio worth $2500, property of Krishna Persaud.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Bernard Brown, in objecting to Crawford being placed on bail, stated that more charges are likely to be filed against the accused. Brown told the court that based on the nature of the crime and its attendant facts, the defendants should not be given pre-trial liberty. He said the men have a criminal past.
The Magistrate granted the Prosecution’s plea and ordered that the defendants return to court on March 26 for a police progress report.
The police contend that on the day in question, six men — two of whom were armed with guns — went to a ranch house at Potoko Creek, Canje River and, held three male labourers at gunpoint before stealing the items.
