…as Reg 3 gets 12 new trucks delivered to every NDC
President Dr Irfaan Ali on Monday handed over 12 new garbage compactor trucks to Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), bringing each NDC in the region to at least one dedicated truck.
The head of state said the initiative is part of the Government’s effort to strengthen waste management systems and improve public infrastructure across communities.

“Today [Monday], we are delivering at least one garbage truck to every single NDC. This is not to replace. This is to supplement,” the President stated, noting that the trucks will support the maintenance of public spaces and infrastructure.
The latest distribution follows the earlier allocation of two trucks to the NDCs of Wakenaam and Leguan. With the addition of the 12 units, Region Three has now achieved full coverage.
President Ali said the government is also advancing plans for more sustainable waste management, including the development of modern landfill sites supported by compacting and decomposing technologies to convert waste into reusable materials.
He urged communities to take responsibility for maintaining the equipment, noting that proper care of state resources is key to long-term development.
The president also highlighted the government’s approach to inclusive development, stating that agencies have been tasked with identifying reserve lands that can be converted into hubs for small businesses.
He noted that approximately 11,000 contractors are currently engaged in projects nationwide, with about 1,500 operating in Region Three, reflecting increased participation in development.
According to the Head of State, investments must translate into improved quality of life, with plans also in place to establish centres of care for children and the elderly. He added that public spaces will be optimised to ensure equal access for all citizens.
The President pointed to the rapid expansion of Region Three, including the opening of lands for housing and agriculture, as part of a broader plan to transform the area into a tourism hub.
“This investment is about safer communities, healthier communities. It is about building an ecosystem that supports the highest quality of life,” he said.
“Your life will change significantly”
Also addressing the event, Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Priya Manickchand said ongoing infrastructure works are contributing to improved living standards. She referenced projects such as the Guyana-China Friendship Park and the Demerara River Bridge, along with upgrades to road networks.
“Your life will change significantly,” the minister said, adding that community-focused development remains a priority.
Region Three Chairman Sheik Mohamed Inshan Ayube also noted the ongoing transformation across the region.
Meanwhile, Deonarine Jaipersaud of Waller’s Delight, West Coast Demerara, welcomed the initiative, saying it will contribute to a cleaner environment.
“We’ll have a healthier environment for our children to play in the streets again, like before,” he said.
The government has already distributed garbage trucks to Regions One (Barima-Waini); Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). With the latest handover, a total of 46 trucks have been distributed nationwide as part of efforts to equip all 70 NDCs.
