Timehri man nabbed after tossing gun, ammo in churchyard
A 30-year-old resident of Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was arrested in the wee hours of Saturday after he allegedly tossed a haversack containing a .32 pistol, two spent shells, and a magazine into a city churchyard.
He was reportedly apprehended at about 02:00h along Croal Street, Georgetown, by three private security officers attached to the Blackwater Tactical Security Firm.
Based on reports received, the three security officers were doing residential checks/patrol when they stopped to purchase food on Light Street between Robb and Regent Streets. Whilst there, they heard several loud explosions coming from Regent Street.
Soon after, the men observed a male who was dressed in a black and white jersey and carrying a yellow haversack running along Light Street. Without hesitation, the three security officers went in pursuit of the man who was running towards a Silver Toyota Spacio bearing registration number PVV 8934 that was parked at the corner of South Road and Light Street.
However, as the security ranks approached the vehicle, a male occupant exited the car and joined the other man. It was reported that two of the security officers continued to chase after the male who was carrying the haversack.
During the chase, the security officers observed him throwing the haversack into a churchyard at Cummings Street between Brickdam and Croal Street. The man was eventually apprehended on Croal Street.
Nevertheless, the haversack was retrieved and searched during which a black .32 Sig Sauer pistol along with two .32 spent shells and a magazine were found therein.
The EBD resident was taken to the Alberttown Police Station where he identified himself as a resident of Timehri.
Meanwhile, the motor car, PVV 8934, was impounded at the Alberttown Police Station. A search conducted on the car revealed a driver’s licence belonging to another male also of Timehri, EBD, and an identification card of a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Corporal.
The suspect remains in custody, as investigations continue. Following the apprehension of the man, Police Commissioner (ag) Clifton Hicken lauded this sort of collaboration and partnership in crime-fighting.
