Times Square display, bridge illumination in New York to be part of celebration – Guyana’s 56th Republic Anniversary

The Consulate General of Guyana in New York will host a series of events to commemorate Guyana’s 56th Republic Anniversary, including a digital display in Times Square, the illumination of a major New York bridge, and an interfaith service in Brooklyn.
According to a press release, the activities are intended to highlight the spirit and unity of the Guyanese people and reflect the presence of the diaspora in New York.

The observances will begin with an official commencement ceremony for a commemorative visual display in Times Square at 12:15 am on Sunday, February 22, 2026. The display will be mounted on four large digital screens located at 1552 Broadway, between 46th and 47th Streets in Manhattan. A designated viewing landmark has been identified at 1535 Broadway, Suite 0161A, New York, NY 10036.
The advertisement will run from Sunday, February 22 to Saturday, February 28, 2026. It will be featured three times per hour at 15, 35 and 55 minutes past each hour. The seven-day display is designed to underscore Guyana’s national identity and cultural heritage on an international platform widely recognized for public messaging and global visibility.
In a separate initiative, the Mid-Hudson Bridge in Poughkeepsie will be illuminated in Guyana’s national colours from Monday, February 23 to Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The lighting will take place from sunset at 17:37h to sunrise at 06:38h on both evenings.
The bridge illumination is intended to recognize the contributions of the Guyanese diaspora across New York State and to mark the national anniversary in a visible manner. The lighting display will be located at 475 U.S. 44/55, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
An interfaith service and brunch reception are also scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2026 at 21:30h. The event will be held at St Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, located at 331 Hawthorne Street, Brooklyn, New York 11225. The service is expected to bring together members of the Guyanese community and friends of Guyana for reflection and fellowship as part of the anniversary observances.
Guyana became a republic on February 23, 1970.
