Top GPF officials visit family of man killed by cops
…commit to leaving “no stone unturned”
Acting Commissioner of Police, Nigel Hoppie; Regional Commander of Division 4 A, Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean; the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor; Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent Wendell Blanhum and Pastor Roberts on Sunday visited the grieving relatives of Cecil Sampat.
Sampat, 39, of Festival City, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was club-hopping with his coworkers, 27-year-old Winston Fraser, who is now paralysed along with Joshua Letlow and Seon Greenridge on July 25 when Police opened fire on them.
When contacted, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor stated that the mission was to reassure the family that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted by a dedicated team with alacrity.
“The Commissioner went to reassure the family that he is committed for a comprehensive investigation and he will not leave any stone unturned in the bid to get the truth as to what happened and wherever ranks are found tort, they will be dealt with by the law,” Andries-Junor relayed to this publication.
Acting Commissioner, Nigel Hoppie also took the opportunity to restate his administration’s commitment to the delivery of quality service in keeping with the Force’s mandate set out of Chapter 16:01.
Relatives stated that the four friends were in motor car PYY 4432, which Police mistook for a car used in a recent robbery at Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
But according to a police report, the ranks had dispersed a crowded bar at Agricola, during which there was a fight between two men and one of the men was armed with a handgun. The armed man subsequently entered PYY 4432, and as such, the ranks began trailing the car.
However, the police vehicle had some mechanical issues, and the ranks contacted other patrols in the city and notified them of the situation. Sampat and his friends were intercepted on D’Urban Street when Police began shooting at them.
No weapons were recovered from his friends. (G1)
