New members were on Tuesday selected to serve on the Tourism Association in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), which will be aiming to put the Cinderella County on the map of tourism.
Elected as Chairperson for the Association was businesswoman Maria Lord while
Vilma Da Silva was elected Vice President.
Other committee members include Kabakaburi Toshao Cleveland Simon; Capoey Toshao Melrose Henry; Charity-Usara Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Chairpersons Beatrice Mittelholzer and Shakti Kellewan; businessman Gavinash Jaigobin, historian Isahack Basir and businessman Daleep Singh.
These persons were selected at the end of a tourism workshop held on Tuesday in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC). After the election process, Director General from the Department of Tourism at the Business Ministry, Donald Sinclair congratulated members and urged them to act promptly in promoting the Region.
Sinclair advised that the Region has many tourist hotspots, but an association was needed to push Essequibo as a tourist destination.
At the end of the workshop, hotspots were identified and suggestions were made. The new Association members are now tasked to come up with new ideas on how to enhance the Region as well as to market the various lakes and resorts.
The main economic activity for Region Two is agriculture, but it is believed if the Region is marketed better in the tourism sector, it can earn revenues to boost its economy. The main tourist attractions sites currently are Mainstay Resort, Capoey Amerindian Lake, Pomeroon Clusters, Mashabo, Supenaam Creek\Betany, Iturbisi (hot and cold lake), Kabakaburi\Siriki and the Charity areas.
