“Tournament still in early stages,” says Gopaul

GCC, Everest to do battle in ‘Champion of Champions’ tournament…

As the curtains came down on the NBS 2nd Division 40 Overs’ competition last weekend, many fans were thrilled to see GCC emerge champions in a thrilling finale encounter, while the Everest Cricket Team settled for first runners-up.

Sachin Singh of DCC emerged MVP for Zone ‘A’ with 436 runs

NBS Director Dr Nanda Gopaul commended the Georgetown Cricket Association for the work it has done in the tournament, and has promised that the NBS would continue to support the GCA in its future endeavours, as had obtained for the past seven years. Gopaul also said, “I must, first of all, commend the officials for the excellent work they have done in the tournament. We at the NBS believe that the game of cricket is more than just a sport, but (is) something that helps to bring the players together and brings unity to the game. I am very pleased with the way the GCA has run the tournament, as they have demonstrated exceptional leadership from starting to finish.”

Gopaul related that while the match was definitely a thriller, GCC should be proud of themselves, as they have worked hard to get to where they are. He noted that even though Everest had settled for first runners-up, they should not be saddened, as the NBS, GCA and BCB are currently in the early stages of planning a tournament, the top two teams of which — as in GCC and Everest — will do battle against the top two teams in Berbice, in a T20 format competition to determine who will walk away with the title ‘Champion of Champions’.

Azim Azeez bagged 23 wickets, the most in the tournament

The overall statistics of the tournament saw Jason Heyliger of the Police Team recording the best bowling figures of the tournament: 5-11 against Transport; while Azeem Azeez of Transport walked away with the most wickets in the tournament: 23. Sachin Singh of DCC also walked away with the highest score of the tournament: 171 against Diplomats; while UG Trojans’ Melroy Stephenson took 8 catches to register the most catches of the tournament.
In the end, Sachin Singh was adjudged the MVP of Zone ‘A’, having scored 436 runs; and Transport’s Sunil Singh was adjudged MVP of Zone B for scoring 230 runs in the tournament.
