Tourney opens with top performances from youngsters

ANSA McAL/Lucozade ‘Handicap’ Squash 2018…

The Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA’s) Lucozade Handicap Tournament which is being sponsored by ANSA McAL Trading has seen some 40 participants gearing up to showcase their skills in the Open and ‘A’ categories of the competition.

Wednesday night’s opening round saw big name competitors like Nyron Joseph, Regan Pollard, Deejay Dias, Stephen Xavier, Ashley Khalil and Taylor Fernandes putting on a show to intimidate the competition. Many of the players will be starting with significant minus points, and will have to show stamina, patience and sheer talent to overcome their opponents.
In Category ‘A’, some of the younger players will be pitted against Sarah Lewis, Abosaide Cadogan, Maddison Fernandes and Kirsten Gomes. With no division for the girls and boys, draws will also see Gianni Carpenter, Nicholas Verwey and Mohryan Baksh meeting any range of other contenders with positive points.
Among the opening night’s highlights was the encounter that featured the young Baksh beating Lajuan Munroe in two sets 15-8, 15-8, while the young Maddison managed a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Lucas Persaud, surging to two consecutive sets to end the stats 12-15, 15-12, 15-12.
Play, meanwhile, continued on Thursday night, and continues this evening, with earlier starts set for Saturday and Sunday morning.
