A 49-year-old driver from Lima Sands, Essequibo is presently in Police custody assisting with investigations after the tractor he was driving ran over five-year-old Orissa Williams on the Lima Sands Public Road. The accident reportedly occurred around 14:30h on Sunday.
The accident involved the tractor bearing registration plate 21496, and trailer TBB 4806, owned and driven by Ganga Persaud, who is also a hire car driver from Lot 11 Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast.
Information revealed that the tractor was proceeding north along the Lima Sands Access Road, while two pedestrians, namely Ivor Courtman (Junior) and Orissa Williams, were standing on the eastern side of the road facing west.
According to information from the Police, Orissa was in the process of running across the road when she fell on the eastern side of the road. One of the rear wheels of the tractor reportedly ran over her head.
The child suffered severe head injuries and was immediately transported to the Suddie Public Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. Upon hearing the impact, many persons converged on the scene, and family members later rushed to the scene in shock.
Police visited the scene and measurements were taken; however, the tractor is yet to be examined by officers and impounded. The child’s body is presently at the Suddie Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Only recently, a doctor attached to the Suddie Public Hospital, Haimant Haimraj, lost his life tragically on the Vilvoorden Public Road in a road accident involving a motorcycle.
