Trafalgar KO defending champs

Berbice Zone Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’…
-join Hopetown, Outsiders and Lichfield in semis

The West Berbice community of Trafalgar sent defending champions New Amsterdam (NA) Kings crashing out of this year’s Berbice Zone Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ competition, inflicting on them a crushing 3-0 defeat as quarter-final action concluded on Saturday night at the Old Stelling Road in New Amsterdam.

The game was played in front of another large crowd, and Trafalgar joined Hopetown, Outsiders and Lichfield in last night’s semi-finals and final played at the same venue.
Following completion of the Round of 16 play earlier in the evening, Trafalgar squared off against the reigning champs in the third quarter-final game; and even though the contest was an evenly contested one in the first period, one could sense that the visitors were gaining momentum in the final period.

Their hero, Kevin McKenzie, opened his account in the 16th minute with a neat flick into an empty goal, and he was back in action three minutes later when he netted a Guinness goal to seal a well-deserved victory and a place in the last four for his team.

In the first quarter-final matchup, Hopetown, another team from West Berbice, beat Mahaicony 2-0, thanks to a goal from Darren Douglas in the 13th minute and another from Akeemo Watts in the 16th.

Derick Taylor’s solitary strike in the 9th minute booked Outsiders’ place in the last four over Dam Boys, while Lichfield outlasted East Bank Gunners 2-0 in a penalty shootout after their clash ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Over $700,000 in prize money and trophies are up for grabs, while a place in the national playoffs is the other incentive to be derived for winning the competition.
