When the feature race at this year’s Race of Champions is called lots of questions will be answered.
On Sunday December 3, the Rising Sun Turf Club will come alive with the cream of Guyana’s horses take to the starters gate for the “C” Class and Lower race which will cover a distance of 1200M (6 Furlongs).
This race is expected to be the fastest 1200M race ever at the Rising Sun Turf Club when two of Guyana’s fastest horses line up side by side. The newly imported, Guyana Cup and President’s Cup Champion, Vera’s Finally from the Jumbo Jet Racing Stable who has the fastest 1600M time at the Rising Sun Turf Club and Storm Bird from the I. Bacchus Racing Stable with the fastest 1000M ever seen in Guyana will have a score to settle over 1200M.
There is a beautiful predicament however, for Trainer Fazal Habbibulla and Jockey Colin Ross as they are the trainer and jockey for both of the champion horses and on race day some tough decisions will be made.
Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr, owner of Vera’s Finally confidently stated that his filly is all set to go at a distance of 1200m for the first time in her racing career. “She has the track record with the fastest time going at a distance of 1600M at Rising Sun Turf Club, So I am more than 100 percent sure that she will set a 1200M record against the fastest 1000M horse ever seen in Guyana, Storm Bird.”
On the other hand, Storm Bird’s owner I. Bacchus said he hopes that Vera’s engine is well serviced because he is expecting his bird’s wing to extend even bigger at the Race of Champions.
As expected, Trainer Habbiublla said he has no comments on the head to head clash as yet but said that “they are both great horses with big hearts.”
So on December 3 at the Rising Sun Turf Club it will be two champion horses, two confident horse owners, one excellent trainer and one steady jockey. Until then, the questions still linger, who will Colin Ross ride and who will be the trainer’s favourite?
The annual Race of Champions is organized by the Jumbo-Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee (JJTRC) and will have a total of eight nail biting races much to the delight of turfites from near and far.
