Trial opens for man accused of killing “Whyte Eye” 

The trial of Bhola Jaipersaud, called “Joey”, who is accused of murdering Bush Lot Village resident Rameshwar Sydney, called “Whyte Eye”, opened on Tuesday at the Berbice Assizes before Justice Gino Persaud.
A 13-member jury was empanelled to hear the case against Jaipersaud, of Bush Lot, Corentyne, who is charged with murder contrary to common law.
The indictment alleges that on July 8, 2022, at Bush Lot Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Jaipersaud murdered Sydney.
Jaipersaud is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Rahamat Latchmi, while prosecutor Marissa Edwards is appearing for the State.
The prosecution has indicated that it intends to call 15 witnesses during the trial.
Following the empanelling of the jury on Tuesday, the matter was adjourned until Monday, when the prosecution is expected to call its first witness.
Sydney, a 47-year-old cash-crop farmer and father of five, was killed at Bush Lot Village on July 8, 2022.
Reports at the time stated that Sydney had returned home from his farm and was having lunch when a neighbour visited and invited him over to chat.
Sydney reportedly left his home and went with the neighbour but, minutes later, was seen running from the neighbour’s yard towards his home with a knife lodged in his neck.
A security guard who was passing through the area reportedly saw the injured man collapse and raised an alarm.
Sydney was subsequently taken to the Port Mourant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Reports following the killing had indicated that Sydney and the neighbour were known to each other and were considered friendly, and as such, relatives reportedly had no initial reason for concern when Sydney left his home.
Jaipersaud was subsequently charged with Sydney’s murder.
The case will continue on Monday before Justice Persaud and the 13-member jury, with the State expected to begin presenting its evidence.
