A Trinidadian national was on Thursday arraigned for causing the death of a 40-year-old pedal cyclist when he appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

The accident in front of Yokohama Auto Sales

Twenty-five-year-old Akedo Isaiah McPhee, of Oronoque Street, Queenstown, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the charge which read that on September 3, 2020, at Bel Air Public Road, Greater Georgetown, he drove pickup GTT 8153 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Navindra Doray.
McPhee appeared before Magistrate Melissa Mittelholzer and was remanded to prison until September 28, 2020.
It was reported that on the day in question about 13:00h, Doray, of Block “F” Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was proceeding along the Bel Air Public Road when the pick-up slammed into him from behind.
The Tacoma pick-up was reportedly travelling at a fast pace and as the driver approached the Yokohama Auto Sales, he overtook several vehicles on the inside lane and in doing so collided with the pedal cyclist. He then lost control and slammed into a concrete fence.
Further, the vehicle then turned turtle and ended up in the centre of the East Coast Highway.
As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist was tossed into the air and landed on the road surface sustaining injuries to his head and body.
The driver, along with a 32-year-old male occupant, was also injured. They were all picked up and taken to Georgetown Public Hospital for medical treatment. However, upon arrival, the pedal cyclist was pronounced dead.
