The University of Guyana Cricket Team, UG Trojans, departed local shores this morning to participate in the 2nd Cyril Bonar Memorial T/20 Cricket Competition, to be held at the DR Snelle Park in Paramaribo, Suriname between September 27, 28 and 30.
Coach of the Trojans side, Kenroy Joseph, is optimistic about his side’s performance. The matches will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 09:30h to 19:00h daily, and admission is without charge.
Among the participating teams are defending champions Spartan CC out of Suriname; UG Trojans, Guyana Eagles CC, Satro CC, and Rising Stars CC, all out of Guyana.
The Trojans will have a score to settle with the defending champions Spartans, after making it all the way to the finals, only to suffer defeat at the hands of the Surinamese side. The new squad selected includes the likes of top-notch players such as Omesh Danram, who will lead the side; Ershad Alli, who will open the batting; Linden Austin, who is ever-consistent; and Devon Paul, a wizard with the ball, among other players.
Speaking with <<Guyana Times Sport>>, coach Kenroy Joseph said the side is focused and prepared mentally and the weather has been favourable, so the side has been able to have practice sessions, unlike what had obtained last year. He added that everyone has been briefed, thus everyone knows the role they have to play.
Many teams will contest the tournament, especially defending champions Spartans, which consists of national Guyanese and Surinamese players, one such player being Guyanese all-rounder Kellon Carmichael, who enjoyed three successful seasons in England playing county cricket.
Joseph believes Carmichael is the player to watch, as he possesses the potential to pose a threat, and the Spartans should also not be taken lightly.
The 14-man Trojans squad are: Omesh Danram(C), Devon Paul, Ershad Alli, Yakini Favourite, Nicholas Bollers, Akeem Methland, Dwayne Dodson, Godfrey Thakurdin, Wendell Parks, Mahendra Persaud, Dwain Dick and Linden Austin.
