A Tactical Services Unit (TSU) rank was on Friday morning nabbed by Police at Cove and John, East Coast Demerara (ECD) with some 21 kilograms (46.2 lbs) of marijuana in his possession.
The New Amsterdam, Berbice resident, who was attached to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Headquarters’ Trafficking in Narcotics Unit, was reportedly intercepted at about 09:00h, as he was travelling solo in a car heading to Georgetown when TSU ranks acting on information stopped and searched the vehicle.
They unearthed 10 well wrapped parcels found in several sections of the car, including the back seat and trunk. The rank was questioned, but failed to provide a valid explanation as to why he had the narcotics in his possession, and as such, he was arrested.
Guyana Times was also informed that the rank had been removed from CID duties in Berbice and transferred to general duties after he had allegedly been seen by the then Divisional Commander, Ian Amsterdam, physically abusing his then wife. The policeman, who has since been married to a doctor, was later transferred to Force Headquarters.
Ironically, while he functioned as a detective, he had been considered very effective in bring to justice many who had been found in possession of illegal drugs, and who had been engaged in break and enter activities. Police investigations are ongoing.
