Tucville, Sophia top GRFU Schools tournament

Tucville and Sophia Guiding Light were the top winner when the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) staged their under 16 schools’ rugby football tournament at the national park over the weekend.
The rugby union first schools’ competition of 2017, saw a squad from Sophia Guiding Light Church coming out as victors after a solitary try from Joel Blacks in the last minute of the final played at the national park ground to take the title against a Queen’s College mixed team 5-0.
Meanwhile, Sophia reached the final after wins over Tucville and St John’s College. The Sophia side beat Tucville 20-0 after top scorer and tournament most valuable player Joel blacks registered two tries with one each from Jermaine Floy and Nikhil Carter

They defeated St John’s 15-10 with Blacks again coming to the fore with three tries. QC however reached the final after wins over St John’s and Tucville.
Top Sophia player James Osborne says he used his experience to help his side to victory.
“It’s basically our first tournament, now getting out and I was put just to guide the team basically and they showed a splendid performance today.”
He added, “Next year we have the under 18 tournament coming up so, I do hope that most of the player that we saw today could come out and continue training for next year, to further the scope of Guyana under 18 rugby.”

Meanwhile, on the distaff side Tucville got some success to take the winning trophy, the final contest saw them (Tucville) having to play St John’s in a best of three series for the title.
The first game Tucville battered St john’s 15-5 with Aliyah Alleyne delivering all three tries for the win. In the second contest Tucville turned up the head to win that match 25-0. Most valuable player Aliyah Alleyne showed her skill scoring another three tries couple with tries from Ashanti Woodroffe and Aiesha Deweeder for the imposing victory.
