A 23-year-old motorist lost his life in the early hours of Wednesday following a high-speed collision along the Harlem Public Road, West Coast Demerara, leaving two others injured and prompting an ongoing investigation.
Dead is Bernard North of Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
The accident occurred at approximately 01:30h and involved motorcar, PAJ 6755, driven by North, and motor pickup GAJ 761, operated by a 32-year-old man of Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara. At the time of the crash, the pickup also carried a 33-year-old female occupant from Bangkok, Thailand.
Police investigations indicate that the motor car was proceeding east along the northern carriageway at an alleged fast rate of speed when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The car subsequently veered onto the southern side of the roadway, where it collided with the front right side of the oncoming pickup, which was travelling west.
The impact resulted in injuries to all three occupants. North was reportedly in an unconscious state when he was transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, while the pickup driver and his passenger were conscious but injured.
North was pronounced dead on arrival and the injured driver and passenger of the pickup were treated for their injuries.
Police have since confirmed that a breathalyzer test administered to the pickup driver revealed no trace of alcohol.
North’s body has been taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage obtained from the area as they continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
