Women’s rights take centre stage in the Bollywood 2016 courtroom drama, “Pink”. A retired lawyer, Deepak Sehgal, played by the iconic Amitabh Bachchan, suffering from bipolar disorder, represents three young girls in court after witnessing their troubles.
One night, after a rock concert, the girls accepted a dinner invitation from Rajvir (Angad Bedi) and two other young men. Rajvir is the nephew of a powerful politician. One of the girls, Minal Arora (Taapsee Pannu) was subsequently molested and when a report was eventually made, a female Police Officer did not register the complaint.
A counter claim was made against the girls, labelling them as prostitutes. Using powerful contacts, Rajvir was able to have Minal charged with attempted murder with the other girls as co-accused. This pits Sehgal against the young men’s very influential families.
“Pink”, directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, was specially screened for the Rajasthan Police in India so as to train them to be sensitive and sensible about women’s rights and dignity. The film was also invited for a special screening at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, USA. Amitabh Bachchan suggested that the appearance of his name in the movie credits not be the first, but to follow those of the three young ladies. He pointed out it shows the importance of gender equality which is what the movie is about. As a result, in the opening and end credits, the three main actresses lead before Bachchan’s name. “Pink” will be aired on Sunday, December 11 at 21:00h on TGV Channel 28.
