Twinning of Georgetown with an Indian City being pursued – High Commissioner
…commits to working with M&CC to beautify Mahatma Gandhi statue
The Government of India has committed to assist the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to beautify the statue of Mohandas Karamchand “Mahatma” Gandhi located in the Promenade Gardens, Georgetown, in observance of Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

This is according to Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Dr KJ Srinivasa, who, during a courtesy call to Georgetown Mayor, Ubraj Narine, on Wednesday, stated that his country will be providing assistance to relevant authorities in Guyana to help beautify.
He pointed out that this beautification process will not be limited only to the statue that was erected in honour of Mahatma Gandhi, but also various parts of the capital city.
“This is the year of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Ghandi. So, as part of that, we will be trying to help the city of Georgetown to beautify that area and to redo that premises”.

He explained that India will also be assisting Guyana with developing and transforming Georgetown in various ways using plans that have been successful in advancing cities in India.
“We are also working upon trying to do a twinning of the city of Georgetown with a city in India where complementarities can exist say for example garbage disposal and also in the IT and the language field and the development of culture etc”.
Gandhi, during his lifetime, advocated for non-violent actions.
In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared Gandhi’s birthday on October 2 as an ‘International Day of Non-Violence’. It is also a national holiday in India.
Gandhi’s Doctrine of Non-violence and his philosophy of love, tolerance and truth, have not been confined to India, but are embraced around the world where people fight for freedom and self-determination.
His teachings of peace and humanity greatly influenced various freedom struggles and inspired several world leaders such as Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela in their fight for equity.
