An 11-year-old student of the St Therese’s Primary School, in New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) died on Monday after allegedly ingesting carbon tablets.
Guyana Times understands that Trashana King of Fort Ordinance, East Canje, a Grade Six student, ingested the poison sometime between Sunday evening and
Monday morning. She was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she later died. Carbon tablets are commonly used as a form of pesticide.
While details surrounding the incident are sketchy, this publication understands King was expected to sit the National Grade Six Assessment on April 12 and 13.
The young lady also represented her school at football and was considered one of the leaders in the Children Mashramani Costume Parades, which the school participated in over the past years.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on the body on Monday, and confirmed the cause of death as poisoning. Police are investigating the incident and have since questioned the child’s father who is a Prison officer.
Meanwhile, in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) a differently-abled man from Hibernia village on the Essequibo Coast tragically ended his life on Friday night, after allegedly experiencing prolonged domestic problems.
The deceased, Kemraj Singh, also known as Lanka, reportedly lived with his his wife Dhranie Ramdar, and his mother Hymwattie Primlall. He was said to have been an alcoholic. According to information received, Singh retired to bed at around 23:00h Friday night, and when his wife left to use the washroom, he locked her out. The couple were reportedly married last year.
After repeated calls went unanswered, the woman then proceeded to remove the panes of a nearby window and saw the man hanging from a rafter.
An alarm was raised and neighbours, as well as detectives visited the scene. Singh’s body was cut down and later taken to the Suddie Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead; the body was transported to the Suddie mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Only recently, a soldier from Marlborough, Lower Pomeroon, ended his life after consuming a quantity of poison.
