U-19 Inter-county preparation continues in Berbice
– Anderson, Umroa, Nedd, Singh depart
The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) continues to gear up players for the Under-19 Inter-county Tournament slated for the latter part of April. On Tuesday last, the Berbice Under-19 players assembled at the Albion Sports Complex for their first trial match.
Kevlon Anderson
Among notable players in the trial match were Kevlon Anderson and Kevin Umroa, who will depart today for Antigua to attend the West Indies Under-19 training camps. The two Berbicians, who are likely to feature in the Berbice and Guyana Under-19 teams will join Demerara’s duo, Ashmead Nedd and Sachin Singh, who will be encamped in Antigua, with the Windies Under-19 squad.
During the trial match for the Berbice players at Albion, Anderson’s XI got the better of Umroa’s XI. In the presence of Leslie Solomon and Balram Samaroo, who is performing the duties of the Chairman of Selectors in the absence of Julian Moore, they along with the Guyana Under-15 team witnessed some solid performances.
Batting first in the 50-over match, Anderson’s XI racked up 311; the junior players were given the opportunity to showcase their talents while the senior players took the back seat. Jeetendra Outar smashed 80 for Anderson’s XI. Deonauth Persaud scored 69, while Kevlon Anderson batting at number eight lit up Albion with a shot-filled 47, including shots outside the ground.
In reply, Umroa’s XI reached 226 all out in the intense trial match; Blairmont’s Seon Glasgow top scored with an even 50 Shamar Angel scored 47. Bowling for Anderson’s XI, leg-spinner, Winslow Roberts had 3-40 in seven overs.
Ashmead Nedd
The Berbice team looks a formidable unit on paper, with Windies selectees Kevlon Anderson and Kevin Umroa leading the troops. Berbice will continue their preparation with a two-day fixture ahead of the 2019 Inter-county tournament that will play in the three-day and one-day format.
