U-23 volleyball team out of South American Championships before it begins
The Guyana U-23 Volleyball team will no longer travel to Colombia for the U-23 South American
Championships scheduled for June 18 – 25.
This was disclosed yesterday (June 15) to Guyana Times Sport by the President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF), John Flores via telephone.
The federation had recently acquired $400,000 from the Guyana Olympic Association and revealed that they had only $450,000 in their possession as of Tuesday, June 14.
The 14 players and management team will definitely be dejected especially after putting in weeks upon weeks of intense training more so, since the championships are just a matter of days away.
The squad had been training under the guidance of national coach Levi Nedd with assistance from deputy coach Ian Wills with sessions in at the Port Mourant Training Centre in Berbice and at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue in Georgetown.
The GVF president said that an official media release will be issued on the matter. The release is expected to address among other topics, the question of what methods the federation used to solicit funding for the team’s participation at the Championships and when was the deadline for confirming participation as a team. Up to press time no definite word came from the Guyana Volleyball Federation nor from President Flores.
The touring party of 14 players, two coaches, the manager and a referee were schedule to depart Guyana on June 20.
