UG launches Cheddi Jagan photographic and book exhibition

In commemoration of the birth centenary of the late President of Guyana, Dr Cheddi Jagan, the University of Guyana (UG) on Wednesday launched a photographic and book exhibition in honour of his life’s work.
The event featured key speakers including UG Registrar, Dr Nigel Gravesande;

Professor Emeritus Winston McGowan and Dr Jagan’s daughter Nadira Jagan-Brancier.
During his address, Professor McGowan referred to the works of the late President as “phenomenal” and summarised the range of his works. He also stressed on the humble persona which enveloped Dr Jagan and his famous books, one of which is the The West on Trial that speaks of Guyana’s fight for freedom.
The Professor also quoted Dr Jagan saying, “I first wanted to be a doctor. Didn’t want to be merely a specialist and craftsman and cure individual aches and ills. I wanted to cure the ills of society. I want to know that I have served humanity as a human being.”
Meanwhile, Jagan-Brancier used her platform to speak on the personal life of her father, his ambitions and hobbies.
In addition, there was also a voice clip presented on behalf of UG Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith, who noted that the University was using the exhibition as an opportunity to have conversations about important personalities, policies, and projects.
“We are intending at our university to raise how we deliver intellectual discourse to extend the perimeter of our engagement beyond the places where we have campuses,” he stated.
At the exhibition, which was hosted at the Education Lecture Theatre (ELT), various photographs, books, newspaper articles and other publications which were composed by Dr Jagan were displayed. The organisers also noted that this was just a fraction of his works which they were able to gather and there were many outstanding pieces in other parts of the world.
In the coming days, the exhibition will be held at other areas in the country. It will commence on March 22-29 at the UG Turkeyen Campus, followed by the National Library Main Branch from April 3-10, the National Library New Amsterdam Branch from April 23-30 and finally concluding with the National Library Linden Branch from May 4-11.
The coordinators are urging all students to visit the various exhibitions so as to gain more knowledge on the works of the late President of Guyana. The birth centenary of Dr Cheddi Jagan will be celebrated on March 22, 2018.
