In recent time the Georgetown Football Club has seen an overhaul with the team now consisting mainly of youths who have been performing creditably to date as a unit in the ongoing Corona Beer Invitational tournament.
Guyana Times Sport caught up with GFC’s Head Coach Floyd `Running Man’ Cadogan at a training session and he revealed some of the key factors that would have attributed to the club’s success thus far.
“First and foremost, the main thing is to ensure that there is discipline among the guys, also being in a group, unity and thinking on the same wave length is crucial” Cadogan declared.
He (Cadogan) has been coaching the team for 67 weeks now and he thinks that his side is gelling together nicely on the field. With that amount of `chemistry’ the club is seeing some amount of success.
As in all disciplines of sport, there are standout players in football and GFC is no different with talented players in the key areas.
Up front, Nigerian striker Benjamin Opara has maintained an incredible run of scoring in every game he has played to date. A natural goal scorer, Opara is a skillful dribbler and is also fleet-footed which makes it an arduous task to mark the sharp shooter.
In addition, young midfielder Shaquille Bowen is the link between defence and attack and according to Cadogan, the midfielder who is also the team captain, is key to snuffing out opposition forays as well as starting plays which often results in goals.
Sessie Norville is a formidable keeper between the uprights. The talented custodian, a two-time Digicel Schools champion with Chase’s Academy, has been nothing short of spectacular.
The mood in the GFC camp is upbeat and confident ahead of Sunday’s Corona Beer Invitational semi-final against Northern Rangers who have been on an unbeaten run. Cadogan, a former Thomas United and national striker, believes his charges are eager to prove themselves as they aim to be crowned champions of the local football scene.
