Unlicensed driver slapped with causing death charge
An unlicensed driver, who reportedly caused the death of a 44-year-old man of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Sunday last, has been charged.
Julius Knights of Bare Root, ECD, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday before Magistrate Roshell Liverpool. The first charge stated that on July 26 at Mon Repos, ECD, he drove motor car PPP 5422 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Vickram Budhram. Another charge stated that on the same day, at the same location, he drove motor car PPP 5422 when he was not the holder of a driver’s license. Additionally, the 25-year-old man was also charged for breaching the insurance of motor car PPP 5422. The last charge stated that he drove motor car PPP 5422 when the vehicle was not fit to drive.
The prosecution is contending that the father of three was attempting to cross the road using the pedestrian crossing when motor car PPP 5422, which was heading in the eastern direction on the southern carriageway, at a fast rate, struck the man.
Emergency crews responded and pronounced him dead at the scene. Knights was remanded to prison and the case will continue on August 14, 2020. (G1)
