Unvaccinated man succumbs to COVID-19

Another unvaccinated person has succumbed to COVID-19 in Guyana, raising the country’s death toll to 1281.
The Health Ministry reported that the man, aged 88, hailed from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). He died on September 15.
Statistics from the Ministry revealed that four new coronavirus infections were reported on Friday, thus taking the confirmed cases to 71,243 – 32,654 males and 38,589 females.
Currently, more than 120 active infections are being monitored by the Health Ministry.
There are no patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but five patients are in institutional isolation, 120 are in home isolation, and one is in institutional quarantine. Meanwhile, 69,837 recovered cases have been recorded.
To date, Guyana has processed 692,344 samples to test for the presence of COVID-19.
Vaccination figures show that so far, 446,492 adults, or 87 per cent, have taken a first dose while some 346,315, or 67.5 per cent, are fully vaccinated.
For adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, 35,703, or 49 per cent, have received first doses and 26,192, or 35.9 per cent, second doses.
The latest vaccination figures for children in the five to 11 category shows 8156, or eight per cent, have been administered first doses. However, only 3940, or 3.9 per cent, of this cohort have returned for the second jab.
In addition, 73,489 booster shots were taken.
According to recent figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO), some 605 million confirmed cases were reported globally along with 6.49 million deaths.
In the Region of the Americas, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased to 176 million while the death toll has gone up to 2.8 million deaths.
Symptoms of the coronavirus include fever, cough, tiredness, diarrhoea, pains, sore throat, and loss of taste or smell. The more serious symptoms are difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain, and loss of speech or movement.
