Nineteen-year-old Devi Mankarran was born at Bush Lot, Corentyne and grew up with four sisters. She is an upcoming singer who is full of potential and has a passion for the art form. Devi has resided in Bush Lot practically all her life.
She attended the Kildonan Primary School where she wrote the National Grade Six Assessment and was awarded a place at J C Chandisingh Secondary School in Rose Hall.
After completing her secondary education, she received training at the Bush Lot Village Health Centre as a health care assistant. The talented young woman who also has her eyes set on a medical career worked with Dr Rawana at Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice for a period of eight months. However, things did not go as planned and as such, she is currently unemployed.
However, she started to sing in her village Mandir and then at religious functions and Melas. She was always told that she has a great voice and was encouraged to put in to use.
“After Chris Ramphal’s first song “Tere Bina” I knew to myself that I could work along with him and take my singing to another level, I want to be more than just singing at Mandir and religious functions; I want my voice to be heard across my country and the Caribbean”.
As such, she has teamed up with Ramphal to record a new duet titled “Aankh Hai” which will be released shortly. With this song, she hopes to get her musical career off the ground.
As such, five years from now, she sees herself performing in front of huge audiences while fulfilling her dream which is to become a professional singer. As a teenager, she has had her challenges but it has not deterred her from moving one step closer to realising her dreams.
She encourages her peers: “No matter how hard it is, just make the effort, make a try to follow your dreams, strive for what you want in your life”. Meanwhile, apart from music, she likes to dance and her favourite colour is pink.
She would like to thank her mother Shazeeda; dad, Mahesh; and her family and friends for the tremendous support that they have showed her. She is especially grateful to Chris Ramphal for collaborating with her.
