First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger yesterday joined the Women Across Differences (WAD) organisation to receive a donation from the Bathersfield family, a US- based Guyanese family that originally hailed from Buxton.
The donation, comprising of personal hygiene products, clothing and undergarments, was handed over at the WAD headquarters in Anira Street, Queenstown; and 21 teenage mothers who are currently part of WAD’s Comprehensive Empowerment Programme are to benefit from this donation.
The First Lady, Patron of the organisation, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the family’s act of kindness, and offered the girls some words of encouragement. “This is not the last stop for you. It is the beginning, and once you believe in yourselves and you keep pushing, even when things look a bit dark and gloomy, know that you can always move forward,” She said.
Ms. Tessa Bathersfield, who represented the family, explained that the donation was made as part of the family’s annual philanthropic exercises in Guyana. The family learned of WAD’s work through Programme Coordinator Ms. Clonel Samules-Boston, who is also a friend of the family, and connected with the work of the organization, since a few members of the family had also been teenage mothers.
